Finding the Story Again

Published on

What is this website about?
Good question.

It’s about the stories I come in contact with every day. I love making photographs—it’s that simple. I also love showcasing those images along with the stories behind them. That’s why Wyobraska Magazine was originally started for Scotts Bluff County. It later became Trails West Magazine, which, in hindsight, I didn’t think through very well—it limited my ability to tell stories from other parts of the world.

So I rebranded it into TerraQuest Magazine. “Terr” meaning earth—all of it—meant I could go anywhere, do anything, and make a story from it while doing what I enjoy: using my camera. Simple enough, right?

But then something changed.

I stopped caring about the magazine. That’s what happens when you think no one is looking at your work—and I thought no one was. Turns out, plenty of people were paying attention. I just didn’t see it. When I stopped producing content, everything stalled.

I gave up using my cameras. I had no desire to put one to my eye. I shot a couple of weddings for friends, and that was about it. No exploration. No adventure. I just didn’t care anymore. I was burned out.

Then one day, I decided to check the website—just to make sure it was still there. It was. It needed a few updates, but that was it. The more I looked at it, the more I remembered that I really did love building it. More importantly, I realized I missed my cameras. I needed them again—it’s part of who I am.

So I fired the site back up. But this time, I knew it needed a different approach—both in the content and in what I wanted the magazine to be.

In short, I want it to be what it was always supposed to be: an online resource for anyone looking for information about the topics I cover—animals, geology, science, photography, adventure, discovery, and more.

So I set my mind to improving the search engine optimization to make sure these topics could be easily listed and found online. To my surprise, it worked.

Then I started rebranding all of my social media. Well, I was in the process of doing that when I realized it wasn’t necessary. I really only needed to rebrand my YouTube account and set up a Patreon, which I’m still trying to figure out.

The reason for Patreon is simple: it costs money to go on expeditions, document them, and come back with a good story. A subscription helps make that possible. I’m not looking to get rich off this website. I just want to have fun and tell stories that matter.

If you can help me out—maybe help us out—with that, I’d really appreciate it. Money is tight, and we want to get out there, find stories people will love, see different things, and experience different places and events through the eyes of a photojournalist.

I’m looking forward to this ride with all of you.

Hell, I’m even doing a video podcast, which is a first for me—so I must be taking this seriously.
